モザンビーク 武器アート 『ティンビラ奏者』クリストヴァオ・カニャヴァート（ケスター）作

四国グローバルネットワークでは、公益社団法人２０２５年日本国際博覧会協会と連携し、大阪・関西万博　EXPO 2025のシグニチャーパビリオン「いのちの遊び場 クラゲ館」において、武器アート『ティンビラ奏者』の展示協力とミニティンビラ演奏体験協力を行っています。

ティンビラは、木琴の原型といわれるモザンビークの伝統的な民族楽器で、2005年にユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録されました。特徴的な振動、独特な音色を奏でるこの楽器は、モザンビークの内戦時代に一度、廃れてしまいましたが、南アフリカの鉱山に出稼ぎに出ていた「ショピ族」のヴェナシオ・ムバンデ氏により復活しました。

モザンビークでは、1992年に内戦が終わりましたが、市民の手に武器が残されていました。そこで、現地のNGOにより「銃を鍬（くわ）へ」という平和構築事業が始まり、自転車やミシンなどと交換する武器回収が行われました。現地のアーティストは、集まった武器の一部を二度と使えないよう切断し、平和を訴えるアートに変えていきました。

この『ティンビラ奏者』の作品は、ケスターというアーティストによって2006年に制作され、四国グローバルネットワーク（旧称：えひめグローバルネットワーク）が所蔵しているものです。『いのち』と『復活』を感じていただけたら幸いです。

Mozambique Weapons Art 　“Man playing the Timbila”by　Cristôvão Canhavato (Kester)

In cooperation with the Japan Association for the 2025 International Exposition, Inc, Shikoku Global Network is supporting the display of the weapon art “A man playing the Timbira” and the experience mini-timbira performance at the signature pavilion “Jellyfish Pavilion at the Playground of Life” at EXPO 2025 in Kansai, Osaka.

The timbilla is a traditional Mozambican folk instrument said to be the prototype of the xylophone, and was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2005.

The instrument, with its characteristic vibrations and distinctive tone, was once abandoned during Mozambique’s civil war, but was revived by Venancio Mbande, a member of the “Chopi tribe” who was working in a mine in South Africa.

In Mozambique, the civil war ended in 1992, but weapons remained in the hands of citizens. A peacebuilding project called “Guns to Hoes” was initiated by a local NGO to collect weapons in exchange for bicycles, sewing machines, and other items. Local artists cut up some of the collected weapons so that they could never be used again, and turned them into art that appealed for peace.

This work, “Man playing the Timbila,” was created by an artist named Kester in 2006 and is in the collection of Shikoku Global Network (formerly known as Ehime Global Network). We hope you can feel “life” and “revival.
